Huong Lan, San Jose, CA

The banh mi here is still excellent but somehow no longer as spectacular as I remember. The baguette was not beautifully crispy this time. The pickled vegetable was almost not sour enough. I had a roasted pork banh mi and I found the meat tasted rather sweet.

While the banh mi failed to truly impress, the pre-packaged to-go items were amazing as always. I had some freshly prepared Banh Bot Loc and Banh it that were totally fantastic.

Phat Tri, San Jose, CA
Less than 6 bucks for a 2 feet long sandwich. Seriously. I though they gave me someone else order when I pick up the paper bag loaded with two (longer than subway) foot long. These aren’t even skinny like Lee’s.The #1 special banh mi is a kitchen sink with almost everything they offer. I like it. The bread - crisp. The pickles - flavorful. The pate and meat - tasty.Cheap and fulfilling. I really can’t complain. Store is cash only. Make sure you have enough in case you want to pick up some French imported goodies or cooked food as well. High-res

Caffe Sapore, San Francisco, CA

Caffe Sapore is your friendly neighborhood cafe that serves up some decent sandwiches. The coffee though, was a slight disappointment. The brewed coffee tasted awfully sour. The cappuccino lacked brightness. The only saving grace was the extra thick foam.

I did rather enjoy their focaccia sandwiches, especially the Cortina. It was made with smoked salmon, avocado, capers, lemon juice and olive oil. Ingredients were clean and simple and it just tasted wonderful. Kool Guy was decent for a vegetarian sandwich although I found the mustard a bit too strong for me to handle.

Not a bad place to grab a quick breakfast but I really expect the coffee to be better. Much better.

Fresh U Order Bakery, Sunnyvale, CA

With Fresh U next door, I don’t see why anyone would ever frequent the neighboring Subway. Well… Unless you really crave a sandwich in late afternoon or cold rock hard subs are your thing.

Each sandwich is made to order and always come out hot. Bread is fresh and ingredients are tasty. Their breakfast eggwich (available all day) is my favorite - fluffy egg in between a dense and chewy bagel, perfect meal to start a day.

While the sandwiches might not be award winning, Fresh U is still a neighborhood gem. I wish they could expand their veggie selection or offer egg white variety for those with diet restrictions.

Woodside Bakery, West Yellowstone, MT

I really didn’t expect to find such an awesome bakery in a tiny gateway town. The baked goods here are simply labor of love. Breakfast and lunch sandwiches are all made to order and prepared with the freshest bread they made. Kitchen are quite open so you can take a peek to check out the chefs working at different stations. Catch one of the fresh out of the oven pastries and you will be in heaven.

Next time on your way in or out of Yellowstone, be sure to stop here for a foodie approved sandwich.
